Soins palliatifs : généralités

Que sont les Soins Palliatifs ?

"Palliatif" vient du terme latin "palliare" qui signifie "couvrir d'un manteau, atténuer".

Les Soins Palliatifs sont des soins qui permettent d’atténuer les symptômes, les souffrances et vivre au mieux avec la maladie à défaut de pouvoir vivre sans, et parfois même plus longtemps.

Ils sont associés avec les soins oncologiques, ou non, selon les situations.

Pourquoi les Soins palliatifs ?

Avoir un manteau au cas où n’oblige pas à s’en servir et n’influera pas sur la météo.

La kinésithérapie a pour objectif d'évaluer et de traiter les déficiences et les incapacités des patients, liées à un dysfonctionnement respiratoire, cardiovasculaire, neurologique ou locomoteur. Elle tente de restaurer, voire de compenser, les fonctions altérées grâce à la rééducation et à la réadaptation. Elle favorise ainsi l'autonomie et la réhabilitation des patients.

An alternative to surgery

Surgical radiology is a diagnostic and therapeutic method called “mini-invasive”. It enables access to a deep seated tumour target by using natural pathways (urinary tract, digestive tract…) or the vascular network (arteries or veins) or by choosing a short route and without risk through an organ (liver for example).

Hormone therapy

The multiplication of certain types of malignant cells is hormone-dependent. This applies particularly to breast and prostate cancer.    
Hormone therapy works by blocking the body’s own hormones to prevent them from stimulating the cancer.   
With breast cancer, oestrogens are blocked and, in the case of prostate cancer, androgens are blocked.  

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy stimulates the body’s normal defence mechanisms, so that it can use the immune system to fight the malignant process and destroy the tumour.
   
Malignant tumours in man are not greatly immunogenic. That is to say that they are not generally recognised as foreign by the body, so that they are tolerated and can grow. It is, therefore, necessary to stimulate body defence mechanisms by means of various agents, such as interferon and interleukin and other immunotherapeutic agents which are in the course of development.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy refers to drug treatments which aim to destroy cancer cells by non-specific mechanisms.
Some chemotherapeutic agents can be administered orally, others intravenously, some are hardly toxic and others more so… Similarly, different tumours do not respond to the same chemotherapy. Chemotherapy does not, therefore, refer to a drug but to a method of treatment which incorporates a wide range of drugs.

For high precision radiotherapy

Tomotherapy combines a CT scanning system with a radiotherapy machine. It is useful in the very precise treatment of tumours of complex shape which are located close to radiosensitive organs. It is particularly indicated in the treatment of large tumours such as certain sarcomas, poorly accessible pelvic tumours (prostate, uterine cervix, etc.) and ENT tumours.
